It took a long time for me to build the Windows 8.1 version of the Explorer8, but I had a good reason for it. The new version is designed and implemented from scratch. The whole system has been renewed and the result is a much better experience for users to enjoy. This version has an abstract view of the folder items which makes it possible to add support for network locations, cloud services such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc. plus the I/O operations (copy/ move, etc.) has been rewritten to take advantage of the new model. Also, the entire logic has been rewritten and re-imagined to make the app much more robust.

In addition, the device list and the tree view have been merged. The new control will give you a lot of free space and control. Remember, to change the name or the icons, just right click (tap and hold) on the favorites to rename them and to go directly to top, a new button has been added to the quick actions.

TreeView

The Windows 8.1 API allows us to take advantage of many new features such as grouped GridView which shows the folder items in groups. (Note that this feature was available in Windows 8, but it wasn’t efficient due to lack of the virtualization). This allows you to navigate to another group directly from the semantic view.

Semantic

One of the most drastic changes in this version is the introduction of context menus to both files and folders. This feature  is only available for mouse and keyboard users (which makes sense for them). Just right click on an item or on an empty space to see its context menu. Tip: To avoid the context menu when you are selecting one item, just hold the control key on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can disable the context menus in the settings:

There are a lot of new features and changes in this version, so to keep this post as short as possible, I’m going to just give a summary of the new and existing features of the app and link them to a video which shows it in action. Please take a moment to read each video’s description to read to learn more about each feature:

First, let’s run the app and set it up for the first time. I strongly suggest you to watch this video because it’s confusing for a lot of users:

Coming up

In addition to the introduced features, 2 important ones are being implemented and you should expect them soon:

  • Undo file operations
  • Support for DropBox (other services after that, based on requests)

Feedback

Don’t forget to give your feedback. This is a new product and there may be some problems. Also, since a lot of the logic code has been re-written, there is a lot of possibilities for this new version. Post your requests and report the problems. I’ll get back to you shortly, promise.
